DREAM RECALL

Technique for Dream Recall

One of the most important steps in Dreamwork, is the ability to be able to recall your dreams. After all, if you do not remember your dreams, how can you utilize them?

When we dream, we are "in" an alpha state. You have most likely heard the term, REM sleep, which stands for Rapid Eye Movement. This is the when the brain is producing predominately alpha brainwaves. When we are in alpha we dream. REM sleep has been so-named because our eyes tend to move rapidly when in this stage of sleep. REM sleep is actually a very active state!

We go through cycles of sleep patterns throughout the night. (I will use the general term "night") These cycles generally last approximately 90 minutes. In each of these cycles, when we are in REM sleep (alpha) we have a dream. The average person produces from four to six dreams a night.

`Great' you are saying.....four or five dreams to try and remember?! The best way is to start with one and then work from there...if you so decide you want to recall more. I'll discuss in the section about utilizing dreams how to "program" yourself to accomplish your dreamwork with just one dream a night.

Okay....let's get started on the road to dream recall!

The important things are: to want to recall dreams, to believe you can, and to that you will recall dreams. Sounds rather simplistic, huh? Not really. Your brain is, in some respects, much like a little child. It'll do what you tell it to do...but if it thinks it doesn't have to follow orders...it might not. I often tell my clients, that our brains tend to function on "automatic pilot". Most of us don't exert too much control over our brains. After all, it usually does what it's supposed to do....we breath regularly, it tells us when we hurt, are hungry, etc, and we can just go our merry little way....

Telling our brains to recall a dream or dreams is in effect, an order. But in giving the order you really don't expect or care if that order is obeyed...well just like that little child...it may...or may not! It might have more fun (or so it thinks) things to do!

So begin with purpose!

The second most important thing I can tell you...is not to get discouraged if it doesn't work the first time! It may take a few tries. You are an individual. You may find that after just one night - you have excellent dream recall. It may take you a bit longer. Be patient with yourself...go ahead and be firm with the ol' brain...but be gentle on yourself.
