USING DREAMS FOR DRESS REHEARSAL
"Dress Rehearsal"Have you ever wanted to "try out" an approach before actually committing yourself to an action? Have you ever been afraid of what someone's reaction might be? Well, with lucid dreaming, a "dress rehearsal" is possible! I'm going to start right out with the arguments I hear when I teach this technique, for they are valid. The first comments usually made are: "it's only fantasy" and "since it probably won't happen in real life exactly that way, why bother?" Fantasy? Yes, that is correct. So are a large percentage of our thoughts about any given subject or occurrence. If you think about it, we "flavor" most of our thoughts and add to them. You have heard the saying that if you ask two people who witnessed the same event, you'll get two completely different stories? So, much of how we perceive "real" life is fantasy, so I figure we might as well use it to our advantage. The second comment is just as true. When we think about something that we are going to do in advance, we find when it actually happens it is often very different. Why bother then with "dress rehearsal"? I believe that by doing so with lucid dreaming, we can take those very human characteristics and use them to our advantage. Whereas when we daydream and let our mind go "it's own way", instead, with lucid dreaming we can control it to give us many different scenarios. It is in effect, a form of brainstorming. By lucidly dreaming different ways to approach an event, circumstance or problem, we can have much more information to use. Lucid dreaming allows us to "film" in advance, complete with our reactions, the people involved and what their reactions might be. By doing so, we can reject or accept an approach or behavior. What about objectivity? Since we are the ones dreaming, and therefore making up the material, won't we flavor the outcomes? To some extent, that also is very true. However, you will be surprised by how objective and unbiased your dreams can be. Especially with continued practice of this technique, you'll give yourself the freedom to not have the results that always end up "going your way". Since it's a dress rehearsal, you are free of the consequences of real actions. Therefore, you'll soon find you are having more realistic scenarios. You will find that your dreams may show you an approach you might not have thought about otherwise. One of the biggest advantages of using this technique for me has been that I've found that I've often made a mountain out of a molehill! Since I do work with dreams, the flip side has happened. A "chance" dream will show me that I may have not taken a matter seriously. I can then work with lucid dreaming to help show me possible ways to approach it. If you have not read the previous articles on lucid dreaming, I would encourage you to do so. You will then be able to use the technique of "dress rehearsal". Once you are able to lucid dream, it's simply a matter of allowing yourself to have dreams where you "try out" various behaviors or approaches in any situation. You then will be able to "see" in advance what the results and connotations might be.
