THE ALPHA STATE

BRAINWAVE PATTERNS AND THE "ALPHA STATE"

Many of you may have heard the term, The Alpha State. It's not some magical place, where only the enlightened can go. It's a brainwave pattern produced by our brains naturally.

There are four brainwave frequency patterns: Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta. Our brains produce all four frequencies simultaneously, however, at any given time one frequency is more dominant.

BETA

The frequency range of Beta is approximately 14 cps (cycles per second) and upwards. This is the brainwave pattern we are "in" when we are alert and active. We are concerned with outward things, taking in information from all our senses.

ALPHA

The freqency range of Alpha is approximately 7 to 14 cps. This is the "state" one hears so much about in metaphysics. It's associated with meditation, hypnosis, daydreaming, REM sleep, `spacing out', `vegging out'. All those states of mind are when you are "in" alpha.

Dreaming takes place in the alpha state, which is known as REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep.

When we sleep at night, we go through cycles, generally lasting approximately 90 minutes per cycle. In the cycle we pass through all four of the brainwave patterns. In each cycle throughout the night, the amount of time we spend in alpha (REM sleep) increases. In the first cycle, it's generally only the time just before we really fall asleep that we are in an alpha state. As soon as we do, we tend to go into theta sleep.

In each progressive cycle, the period of alpha increases, until the last dream cycle. When we awaken in the morning, we usually do so from a lengthy alpha state. This is one of the reasons we can more easily recall the dream we had just before waking.

It is thought that much of the body's rejuvenation process takes place while in alpha. One can find many studies about sleep deprivation and it's effects on the human psyche.

We are much more susceptible to suggestion at this state, perhaps as much as 21 times more than in a beta brainwave pattern.

THETA

The frequency range of Theta is approximately 4 to 7 cps. This state is associated with "deeper" hypnosis. Generally when a person is under anethesia, they will be in a theta brainwave pattern.

DELTA

The frequency range of Delta is approximately 0 to 4 cycles per second. Not much is really known about this frequency level, or what occurs while in this state.
