THE ALPHA STATE
There are four brainwave frequency patterns: Beta, Alpha, Theta, and
Delta. Our brains produce all four frequencies simultaneously, however,
at any given time one frequency is more dominant. BETA
ALPHA
Dreaming takes place in the alpha state, which is known as REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. When we sleep at night, we go through cycles, generally lasting approximately 90 minutes per cycle. In the cycle we pass through all four of the brainwave patterns. In each cycle throughout the night, the amount of time we spend in alpha (REM sleep) increases. In the first cycle, it's generally only the time just before we really fall asleep that we are in an alpha state. As soon as we do, we tend to go into theta sleep. In each progressive cycle, the period of alpha increases, until the last dream cycle. When we awaken in the morning, we usually do so from a lengthy alpha state. This is one of the reasons we can more easily recall the dream we had just before waking. It is thought that much of the body's rejuvenation process takes place while in alpha. One can find many studies about sleep deprivation and it's effects on the human psyche. We are much more susceptible to suggestion at this state, perhaps as much as 21 times more than in a beta brainwave pattern. THETA
